Volume up ? value down for Norwegian salmon exports
NORWAY - Exports of Norwegian salmon in September totalled 51,428 tonnes. This is 19% or 8,356 tonnes higher than in the same month the previous year. The value of exports of Norwegian salmon fell by NOK 32 million to NOK 1.4 billion, according to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.
The fall in value is attributable to lower prices for fresh Norwegian salmon.
In September the average export price for fresh Norwegian salmon with head was NOK 25.83. This was NOK 1.84 lower than the average export price in August and NOK 4.80 lower compared with September the previous year. This year to date, the average price is NOK 27.18 per kilo. This is NOK 6.53 per kilo lower than in the same period last year.
Strongest relative growth to markets outside the EU
This year to date, the volume of exports of Norwegian salmon to EU markets has increased by 20%. In comparison, exports to markets outside the EU have increased by 50%. The strongest growth has been in exports to Russia (47%), Ukraine (96%), China (103%), Thailand (175%) and South Korea (76%).
Exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout grew in volume but fell in value This year to date, exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout have increased in volume by 11% to 31,330 tonnes but fallen in value by 11% to NOK 885 million.
"The fall in value is attributable to reduced prices for Norwegian Fjord Trout," says market analyst Paul Aandahl of the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.
This year the average price to date for fresh Norwegian Fjord Trout is NOK 26.46 per kilo, down by NOK 7.77 per kilo compared to the same period last year. The drop in price is due in part to increased competition from frozen trout from Chile on our main markets in Russia and Japan. Consequently there has been a sizeable reduction in exports of frozen Norwegian Fjord Trout.
