Kenyan fish processing fine for EU exports

KENYA - The Government says it has met all the requirements for fish exports to the European Union. It has undertaken major reforms in the fishing sector in line with the EU's requirements, Livestock and Fisheries, said permanent secretary Jacob ole Miaron and he refuted claims that the country might be banned from the lucrative market.

The EU is yet to deliver its verdict on whether Kenya would continue exporting fish to its markets, six months after an inspection team from the EU headquarters was sent to assess the state of fish handling sites in Kenya.

A verdict was expected three months ago, but the EU has kept Kenya waiting. The Government has, however, conceded that the delay by the EU in giving its verdict was not a positive indicator, but discounted claims that a ban was in the offing. Fishery experts have warned that Lake Victoria could lose out on the export market unless fishing pressure is reduced.
