EU Commission proposes increase in Pandalus import quota

EU - The European Commission has published a new set of proposed tariff reduction quotas including a 20,000 ton quota for cold water shrimp.

The Canadian industry has been urgently pressing for this increase for a number of years. In 2006, the ATRQ (shrimp which can be imported for further processing) was only 7,000 ton, with a 3,000 ton addition at the end of the year. Shrimp imported above the quota was subject to a punishing 20% tariff. Within the quota, the tariff is only 6%.

In a very important expansion of the shrimp under this quota, the EU commission has also determined that modified atmosphere packs, widely used in the UK retail industry, will qualify as product for further processing.

The tarrif rate applies to cooked and peeled shrimp, which is then further processed for sale in Europe, principally through brining, for northern European markets, and for sandwich processors, in the UK. The addition of modified atmosphere packs means that a whole new category of retail products will now be included in the tariff reduction.
