Thais investigate mass fish deaths in river farms

BANGKOK - Thailand has embarked on a two-week investigation to find out whether a ship sinking with 650 tonnes of raw sugar aboard or factory waste devastated fish farms in the Chao Phraya River, a minister said on Wednesday.

Environment, industry and irrigation officials were probing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of fish raised in pens along the river in the central provinces of Ayutthaya and Ang Thong, Deputy Industry Minister Piyabutr Chonvijarn said.

One prime suspect was the sugar, which might have leaked from a freighter that capsized while turning in a rapid current on March 3 and prevented the fish from getting enough oxygen, Piyabutr told a Bangkok radio station.

Another suspect was a monosodium glutamate factory opposite the pens in Ang Thong where the fish started dying on Monday, he said.
