Freshwater fish on the go
NORWAY - Increasingly more people want to start farming of freshwater fish such as charr and perch. Marketing and production are amongst the topics at a special conference on freshwater aquaculture. Farming of wild-caught Arctic charr. |
"In Norway and several other countries, farming of freshwater fish is an area in growth", says Senior Scientist Sten Siikavuopio, who has worked a lot with charr and European whitefish in recent years.
Farmers in particular have regarded freshwater aquaculture as a supplemental industry or an alternative to agriculture.
Several species
Here in Norway, several freshwater species are of interest for farming. Some trout and charr are already being produced, and these can be followed by European whitefish, burbot and perch.
On 14 and 15 March, people from the industry, research and administration will meet for the conference at Gardermoen. Some of the topics will be marketing, processing and specific challenges associated with production, such as water quality and feeding.
This is the second time the conference is being held, which will be an annual meeting place for the new aquaculture industry.
The Norwegian Freshwater Fish Association, the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research, the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and Fiskeriforskning are behind the conference.
