Thailand to hold talk with Australia over new import rules on shrimp
BANGKOK - Thai fishery officials will seek a meeting with the Australian authorities later this month to make clear their reservations about Canberra’s new health rules on imported shrimp.Jaranthada Karnasuta, director-general of the Fisheries Department, told reporters Thursday that a working group has already prepared information on Thai shrimp and farming standards and will submit the document to Australian agencies involved when they meet on February 15.
Biosecurity Australia, a government agency, has recently released a draft import risk analysis for prawns, which would propose measures, including a ban, to be taken on shipments that could be hazardous to Australian consumers. Comments on the draft can be submitted until February 21 before the analysis is approved and takes effect.
Thai shrimp producers warned that the new measures could act as another technical barrier for shrimp exports from Thailand, the largest supplier in the Australian market.
