Reveals salmonella in 24 hours

NORWAY - New analysis methods at Fiskeriforskning can now reveal salmonella bacteria much faster than before. These can save the industry both time and money.

With traditional analyses, it takes up to five days to get answers to whether salmonella is present in a feed sample or in food. Now these analyses can be done at Fiskeriforskning in only one-fifth of this time.

Answer within a day

This means that the customers don't have to wait for answers for almost a week when they should have been in full swing with production. The analyses start the same day as the samples arrive at the laboratory.

"Many of our customers need fast analyses, and now we can give them answers the day after we have received the samples" says Senior Scientist Halvor Nygaard.

As for accuracy, the tests at Fiskeriforskning's laboratory show that the method reveals salmonella infection with 100 % accuracy. In addition, it can be used on a wide range of products.

Looking for bacterial genes

"With this method, we can perform tests for the entire food industry and for manufacturers of feed and feed ingredients. And they'll get their answers fast", promises Nygaard.

The PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) analyses are the fastest on the market today. Using this method, the scientists reveal gene sequences that are typical for the salmonella bacteria if they are present in the samples.

The method has been under testing at Fiskeriforskning since 2002, and Fiskeriforskning is amongst the very first in Norway to be approved by Norwegian Accreditation for this type of analyses.

Fiskeriforskning has performed more than 150,000 Salmonella analyses since 1988.
