Russian minister impressed by Norwegian cod centre

NORWAY - The Russian Deputy Agriculture Minister, Vladimir A. Izmailov, spent some time learning about the latest aquaculture research when he visited the Norwegian Cod Breeding Centre at Kraknes, outside Troms? recently.

The Minister was given a thorough tour of the facilities and had a number of questions along the way.

"He was very interested in how cod is suitable as a farmed fish," says Fiskeriforskning Scientist, Øyvind J. Hansen, who showed him around the facilities.

The Minister was also very curious about which raw materials are used in the feed, the technology in the project and the quality of the seawater that is being used.

Researcher Øyvind J. Hansen explained how the farmed cod of the future is selected. Jørn Krog, Secretary General of the Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, says that Izmailov was clearly impressed over the quality and the dimensions at both the Breeding Centre and Tromsø Aquaculture Research Station, which is located in Kårvika on Ringvassøya.
