Impressed over quality

NORWAY - The Russian Deputy Agriculture Minister was clearly impressed when he visited the Norwegian Cod Breeding Centre outside Troms?.

The Russian Deputy Agriculture Minister, Vladimir A. Izmailov, was curious about the one centimeter long pit-tag, that the scientists are using in the Cod Breeding Programme.
Vladimir A. Izmailov took good time to study aquaculture research when he visited Tromsø in association with the Norwegian-Russian fishery negotiations.

Curious about cod breeding

The Minister was shown around the Norwegian Cod Breeding Centre at Kraknes outside Tromsø. He was given a thorough tour of the facilities, and had a number of questions along the way.

"He was very interested in how the cod is suitable as a farmed fish", says Scientist Øyvind J. Hansen, who showed him around the facilities.

The Minister was also very curious about which raw materials are used in the feed, the technology in the project and the quality of the seawater that is being used.

Building trust and collaboration

Researcher Øyvind J. Hansen (to the right) explained how the farmed cod of the future is selected.

Jørn Krog, Secretary General of the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, says that Izmailov was clearly impressed over the quality and the dimensions at both the Breeding Centre and Tromsø Aquaculture Research Station, which is located in Kårvika on Ringvassøya.

"We were there because he is interested in the type of activity represented by the two facilities, and he liked the way the research activities are organised", says Krog. Managing Director of Fiskeriforskning, Ivan C. Burkow, stresses that the Russian visit is important for Fiskeriforskning.

"This is important in relation to the Russian research institutions and the work in the Northern Regions. Izmailov was clearly interested in venturing in aquaculture, and by meeting in this way, we are building up trust and further collaboration", says Burkow in closing.
