Print This Page Chilean fishery workers go on strike to protest low wages
CHILE - Workers of AquaChile, the second-largest salmon farm in the world, went on strike and occupied the facilities last week, local news media said.
The Chilean workers are protesting substandard wages at the hugely profitable company.
Workers went on strike after management refused to grant workers a cost-of-living increase that would partially make up for inflation.
The workers are also demanding a 26,000 peso raise (US$48). Base wages for the salmon workers are in the range of 90,000 (US$166.9) and 114,000 pesos (US$211.4).
Even though the company has undergone phenomenal growth, it is considering reducing workers' productivity bonus, which would mean a 40,000 peso (US$74.2) wage cut.
Although the workers occupying the facilities has since been evicted by police, the strike would go on, Rosas said.
