The first fertilised roe from the National Breeding Programme for Cod has now been sold to a fry producer.

"This is a milestone for the breeding programme", says Øyvind Hansen at Fiskeriforskning, who has been responsible for the practical work with the first roe delivery.

Yesterday, 20 litres of fertilised cod roe were picked up from the hatchery and flown to a fry producer in Western Norway.

Faster growth

The roe was produced by the first generation of breeding cod. In two to three days, the roe will hatch into larvae and will later become fry, and will grow up faster than the previous generation.

"This roe was selected from the cod families that have shown the best properties as concerns weight and disease resistance", says Kjersti Fjalestad, who leads the work at the National Cod Breeding Centre.

The National Cod Breeding Centre is operated by Fiskeriforskning and is located just outside of Tromsø.
