Fishing Conflicts Remain Between Norway And Russia

NORWAY - Norway has, however, recently been caught up in conflicts with Russia over fishing and salmon exports. Russia forbid the import of fresh farmed Norwegian salmon at the beginning of the year, after Russian officials claimed the fish contained toxins.

The ban came just weeks after Norwegian authorities had boarded a Russian trawler in the Barents Sea, claiming it was engaging in illegal fishing.

Norway has vigorously defended the quality and safety of its salmon. Its own tests of farmed salmon haven't shown any signs of toxins.

Norway's Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) said Tuesday that a veterinary delegation from Russia was visiting several Norwegian fish farms this week to inspect conditions.

The Norwegian food safety authorities said they were engaged in a "positive dialogue" with their Russian counterparts, and expected the ban to be gradually lifted.
