Hope seen for re-entry of smoked tuna in EU market

EU - Smoked tuna from this city may soon reenter the European Union market following the launching of the 3.9 million Euro (249 million pesos) Trade Related Technical Assistance Program.

In a statement, Luc Vandebon, Charge d' Affaires of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, said the EU-funded program will assist Filipino exporters in selling their products in the 25 member states.

Jan de Kok, head of Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, recently told local reporters that the fate of the smoked tuna products would be considered under the program.

"Efforts have been underway to see what the problems are and look at what you need to do to be able again to export smoked tuna products to Europe," he said.

The trade assistance program was launched last Thursday with representatives from the European Commission, the European Union's executive body, and Philippine government agencies in attendance.

The National Economic and Development Authority will implement the two-year program which will assist the Department of Trade and Industry, the Bureau of Product Standards, the Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Philippine Coconut Authority and the Bureau of Customs.

Vandebon said the program aims to improve these agencies' capacity to ensure exporters' compliance with health, sanitary and other product standards as well as environmental regulations in the EU."
