Norway salmon price regime set to be confirmed for five years

EU - The provisional minimum import price regime established to shield EU salmon producers from the effects of Norwegian salmon imports to the Community is set to be translated into a Commission regulation, it emerged today.

Member state representatives have approved the translation of the provisional pricing regime into “definitive” policy which will establish a five-year strategy and fix the minimum price level at an initial level of 2.80 EUROS (? 1.89).

The move follows an exhaustive investigation into the effects of Norwegian exports on Community producers and provides final justification for Community farmers in Scotland and Ireland who raised the issue in the first place.

A spokesman for the European Commission’s trade department said today:”What has happened is that member states have given their opinion in writing that provisional measures should be translated into a definitive minimum prices regime.

“The Commission will now propose a regulation to the Council which is expected to be endorsed.” It is not clear how quickly the regulation can be agreed but this could happen early in the New Year.

It was announced in June that duties on Norwegian salmon imports were to be replaced by a minimum import price.
