Thai shrimp exports to US growing despite US tariffs - Thaksin

THAILAND - Thai shrimp exports to the United States have increased despite punitive US tariffs, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said, after a US trade panel refused to remove the duties.

Thai shrimp exports to the United States have risen this year despite the tariffs imposed in January, Thaksin said, adding that the duties on Thai shrimp are lower than the penalties imposed on other countries.

'So far there is not any impact,' he told a news conference after an economic summit with the leaders of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

'The US hatcheries were devastated by (Hurricane) Katrina,' which could result in strong demand for imported shrimp, he said, without elaborating further.

Between January and August, Thai shrimp exports to the United States rose more than 29 pct to 97,563 tons, according to Thailand's Shrimp Industry Association.

The US International Trade Commission yesterday recommended keeping the punitive duties in place as revoking them 'would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury' to the US shrimp industry.

Separately, Commerce Minister Somkid Jatusripitak told reporters that the government has asked Washington to reconsider the duties.
